A hall full of elderly white people in Medicare-paid scooters, railing against government spending and imagining themselves revolutionaries as they cheer on the vice-presidential puppet hand-picked by the GOP establishment. If there exists a better snapshot of everything the Tea Party represents, I can’t imagine it.

Except that “Tea Party” is just another name for “disgruntled Republican national voters.” I said so in February, and a new Gallup poll confirms it: 79% of Tea Party members identify as Republicans, 15% as Democrats, and 6% as independents. Far from being a movement of independent voters (who reliably make up between 30 and 40% of the general population), the Tea Party movement is a strongly partisan, demographically Republican movement.
